One hobby that I have found beneficial over the years has been journaling. A new journal for me signals the start of new possibilities and journeys to overcome. Throughout the years, my hobby of journaling has changed depending on the season I am in.
My current journal is a simple one that I purchased at Target (not sponsored), and the prompts on each page have helped me stay consistent on my busy days. The prompts keep me writing and thinking, even on the days when I am exhausted. The one I have now, each page asks the same questions; however, it is enough to help guide my reflections. With each page I am allowed to set realistic goals for myself in the morning and then reflect on how my day went before bed.
Before my experience with journaling was much different. My teen years consisted of a dozen notebooks that I would write in. My reflections would take the form of songs, stories, or random scribbles on whatever came to mind. Comparatively in my 20s, I journaled on my laptop; this made it easy for me and prevented me from losing my notebook on multiple occasions. At this point in my early 30’s, I find that a guided journal works best for me.
Getting Started

As a mom of four and a Manager, there isn’t much time left in my day for self-care; however, I find journaling fills that cup up just enough. In general, many working adults with a family to care for don’t have 20-30 extra minutes in their day to set aside. What I would recommend is this:
- Find a Journal that makes you want to write in it. This could be a guided journal or one with all blank pages. The point of this is to find your motivation – and what doesn’t shout that than a brand new notebook!
- Set a timer: Don’t have much time to get carried away? Set a timer for a set amount of time. Once that timer goes off, finish the sentence you are on, and then be done with writing.
- Get started. Know that it doesn’t have to be perfect. The goal is to start a habit that you’ll be able to keep going.
What Worked for me
When I started writing, I chose 5 minutes. Most of the time I complete a page in less time. Once my writing is complete, there is a sense of accomplishment and direction. I can take on the day with my top three goals in mind, and I work towards them.
Your goals should not be overwhelming to start. The purpose is to set small attainable goals, so you are prepared to tackle larger goals later on.
